Mapy and her family live in the Gràcia area of Barcelona, just steps from the Avinguda Diagonal and within walking distance of the ornate architecture for which the city is famous. Her home reflects her skill as an interior designer and captures the style and flavour of the Catalan city.

Mapy has two rooms to rent in her apartment, which she shares with her husband and three children. She decided to become a host on Homestay.com and rent our her spare rooms to guests. Here she tells us about being a host and what makes Barcelona so special for her as a local and anyone visiting.

Why did you become a host?

My children asked me because they wanted to improve their foreign language skills and I wanted the extra income.

Why did you choose Homestay.com to become a host?

I found the website just by searching on the internet and it seemed the best fit for us.

Had you hosted guests before signing up with us? Tell us about your experiences.

We hosted a couple of American girls who came to stay with us this summer. They fitted in perfectly with the family and we learnt a lot of English from them.

You live in a city that is very well known as a tourist destination. Tell us a little about Barcelona and what you most like about the Gràcia area?

We like pretty much everything, our area is right in the city centre. You have restaurants, shops, parks for walking in, lots of different night clubs and people around 24 hours a day. It’s perfect.

What is your ideal day in Barcelona? What do you most like to do there?

I love strolling around the Barrio Gotico, discovering secret corners of the city or having a glass of white wine on a nice terrace, such as at the W Hotel - the views from here are fantastic.

For anyone who wants to visit Barcelona, what do you recommend they should do while they are there?

There are loads of things to do here, all you need is imagination. From walking and going to shops, to taking in and visiting the stunning architecture along the Passeig de Gràcia... Going out the door, wandering around and finding the best spots to go dancing or to soak up the atmosphere or going for a run on the small walkways close to the beach.

Do you have any advice for anyone who's thinking they'd like to become a host on Homestay.com?

You have to decide from the outset what the rules are, and it is you do and don’t want in your house… Try to take as many guests as possible and be available to them if they need you.

Why should guests book a homestay with you and your family?

We are a very welcoming and cosy family, ready to get to know you and to help you feel at home in our house. Our house if very nice and spacious and my children always have a smile on their face.
