What to do in Washington DC: our travel tips

Washington DC is a favourite US destination for those interested in history, politics and House of Cards! But there is so much to see and do in this city that it can be hard to know where to start. With an abundance of Smithsonian Museums, lots of quirky neighbourhoods and the iconic National Mall to explore, you won't be disappointed by this political capital city. We've put together 10 places for you to experience the best of this cultural hotspot.


1. Have brunch in Tryst and people watch

Tryst is a brilliant spot for a delicious light bite to eat or simply somewhere to take an hour out and relax with a coffee. The cafe is always buzzing and it's filled with all kinds of characters. If visiting in warmer months make sure to get a table in the terrace along the pulled back glass doors.

2. Visit one of the many free Smithsonian Museums

Twelve of the nineteen Smithsonian Museums and Institutions are located in DC, all of which are free so make sure to visit the ones that interests you. The Air and Space Museum is particularly great, so make sure to stop in and explore!

3. Take a walk through Adams Morgan and grab a beer

Adams Morgan is a quirky kind of neighbourhood, filled with lots of trendy concept bars, an abundance of restaurants and small boutiques. If there are any political debates on while you're in town, the bars will be as jam packed as you would expect for a sports game. Enjoy the hecklers from the bar adding their own witty commentary to the discussion!

4. Discover the enchanting Botanic Gardens

From the outdoor Garden Court to the indoor Jungle tropical rainforest and dedicated Children's Garden, there's plenty to set your senses alive at the Botanic Gardens. Check out the Rare and Endangered Species exhibit to see the spectacular collection of threatened plants and habitats.

5. View the changing of the guard at The Tomb of the Unknown Solider

Arlington Cemetery is the resting place of more than 400,000 active duty United States military, veterans and their families. Check out President JFK's eternal flame grave but it's worth venturing further to The Tomb of the Unknown Solider for the changing of the guard. The military procession takes place every half an hour and is seriously impressive.

6. See breathtaking views of the city for free

You'll notice the DC skyline is much more of a low-rise city that it's other American counterparts. However, the National Cathedral's Pilgrim Observation Gallery is a bit of a hidden gem. At a height of 150 feet you can get uninterrupted 360 degree views of this beautiful city. In lieu of an entrance fee, they simply ask for a donation. Visit their website to find out more.

7. Catch a basketball game at the Verizon Center

If the NBA season is on while you're in town (runs October - April), book tickets to experience a Washington Wizards game like a local. There's a fantastic atmosphere at the games and their home The Verizon Centre makes the game all the more spectacular. Make sure to check the Wizards season schedule to make sure they're playing at home.

8. Spot politicians having lunch at the famous Old Ebbitt Grill

First opened in 1856 and located just steps from the White House, the Old Ebbitt Grill is a bit of a DC institution. The menu offers ample choice so there's something for everyone but as a popular meeting spot for political insiders, journalists and celebrities alike it's a fascinating spot to watch the world go by.

9. Listen to live Jazz outdoors

Grab a picnic blanket an experience the open air jazz festivals every Friday from May to September in the National Gallery of Art's Sculpture Garden. A popular event, getting a good spot can be tricky so arrive in plenty of time to get a good spot. Pick up a bite to eat from the many food trucks and enjoy the music. 10. Venture through the National Mall

Discover the history and beautiful buildings that Washington DC is famous for along the must see National Mall. Start at Captiol Hill, it's well worth taking the guided tour but book ahead online to avoid the queues remember there are restrictions on bringing liquids into the building.

Lastly, it wouldn't be a visit to DC without taking in the impressive White House. Keep an eye on Twitter for official schedules and you may see the full security escorts arriving. A short hop from here you'll find the Washington Monument, the Vietnam and the Lincoln Memorials where countless films have been shot over the years. Take in the history and have fun re-enacting a few!
