A Holiday in Cape Town: Perfect Views and Penguins

Michael and his wife travelled from their Vietnam home to discover Cape Town with the help of their hosts Marilin and Leslie. From wine tasting to penguin sightings, they seemed to have done it all and captured some stunning views along the way. I asked Michael how they got on with their first homestay experience. Read their jealousy inducing tale about their holiday in Cape Town.

having a lovely meal with our hosts

Traveling for us is all about meeting new people, places, and adventures. And when staying at someone else's home, it's the very best chance to meet great people and exchange your experience of life. With Marilin and her family, we have been extraordinary happy because they are not only friendly but open-minded and gave us some true insights not only about the Cape Town area but South Africa as a country. We have been part of the family and this experience is ten times better than staying alone in any 5-star hotel.

What did you do in Cape Town?

First of all, Marilin's husband Leslie is working at the waterfront, so we got plenty of information regarding this place. An absolute must do! Take your chance for lunch outside with a great view or an evening boat cruise. We loved to do both! And well, while people say that going on top of the table mountain by cable-car is a must, we prefer to go to Signal Hill and enjoy the view from there. Not only is it free but the views are stunning, and no waiting lines, so you are not throwing away hours of your valuable holiday time.

Cape Point is a must-do, as well and on your way back make a stop at Boulder Beach to watch the penguins there. And if you are into good wines combined with a great view visit the Uva Mira wine-estate high up in the mountains of the Stellenbosch area and try their extraordinary wines while having a perfect view over wine-yards, the ocean and - in the far distance - Cape Town. Don't forget to order the cheese and meat platter there - so delicious!

Any tips or advice for other travellers?

Standing on top of Signal Hill and enjoying the view over Cape Town. Visiting Kirstenbosch Gardens and doing a walk in nature. The incredible view from Uva Mira wine estate combined with the tasting of excellent wines, cheese, and cold-cuts. Or just enjoying a Cappuccino at Basic Bistro on Church Street in Stellenbosch. And watching the cute penguins at Boulder Beach/Simonstown.

Take your chance there and from Fishhoek take the Boyes Drive (M75) on your way to Muizenberg (stunning views). And visit the colorful old changing rooms at the beach there. Don't to forget Bloubergstrand, the only place to 'catch' Cape Town straight in front of the table mountain.

How was your experience with your host?

Our wonderful hosts, Marilin and Leslie

We arrived late and were surprised by a very warm welcome and a fridge filled with goodies for our breakfast next morning since the shops were closed for the day already. We loved the studio we stayed in, nicely decorated, super clean and equipped with everything and more you need for a stay. But most of all we loved the friendliness of our hosts: they not only gave us a lot of information about what to do and see but we had talks with them about the history of South Africa, its challenges, its future and its past. A mind opening experience!
