Havana Casa Particular

Jessica and her husband from the United States stayed in a Havana Casa Particular with hosts Bertha and Fidel.

Tell us about your experience staying in a Casa Particular

My casa particular was right outside of Havana, which had about four rooms to rent. Each room had its own little kitchen and private bathroom. The area where the Homestay was located was very safe, and so was the actual property. Right outside our door, there was a cute porch area where our hosts would set up a table and serve us a delicious breakfast every morning. What I enjoyed most about my Homestay was how clean and comfortable the room and bathroom was. Staying in a Homestay was much more valuable than staying in a hotel or any other accommodation because we saved a ton of money, and we really got to experience the Cuban culture, living with a real Cuban family.

Here is a picture of my Husband and I with our hosts, Bertha and Fidel standing in front of our Homestay.

Hi

What did you do in Havana?

In Havana, my husband and I visited several places including: Museo de la Revolucion, Plaza de Armas, the Malecon, Plaza de la Revolucion, and lots of bars and clubs! We also took a couple day-trips. On one of the days we went to Varadero. It is a beautiful beach with lots of sunshine and turquoise water! The next day we took a trip to Vinales. Here, we visited the tobacco farms and watched a farmer make cigars, which we were able to smoke right after he was done! In Vinales we also visited La Cueva del Indio. It is an awesome cave with a river in it! What surprised me most about Cuba was how welcoming the Cuban people are towards tourists! They are extremely kind and lively people!

Any tips or advice for other travellers?

A few tips I have for future Cuba visitors are the following:

1. If you live in America, exchange your currency to European or Canadian currency before you leave. When you get to the airport in Havana, you can change it to the Cuban currency at the airport.

2. Use the local buses for transportation as much as possible, you will spend less than a dollar to get where you need to be. If you take a taxi everywhere, you will most like spend about $10-$20 per ride.

3. If you plan on visiting Vinales or Varadero, purchase and excursion at one of the hotels in Havana. It will cost you between $65-$80 per person, but that is the best way to go, rather than taking a private taxi! Usually the excursions provide a free lunch and drinks!

This is in Vinales. The Tobacco is drying. It was so cool to see the process of making cigars!

A stand out memory I have from this trip is when my husband and I went to Club La Red in Havana. That night we let go of every worry we've ever had and truly enjoyed ourselves. We drank, smoked cigars, and danced all night with Cubans and people from all around the world!

At a bar called Dos Hermanos. We're having a couple mojitos. (Mine is blended. I can't remember how many I had).

How was your experience with your host?

My husband and I honestly had the most memorable experience with our hosts, Bertha and Fidel. They were kind and extremely personable! Bertha and Fidel gladly answered any questions we had regarding transportation, currency, places to visit, the government and so much more! They gave us tons of advice and truly made our trip to Cuba easy and stress-free. Our experience in Cuba was very different from our day-to-day lives in America being that we were relaxed, worry-free, and full of joy the entire week! For that, I must thank the lively people of Cuban and our amazing hosts, Bertha and Fidel!

To the left of the Malecon. I love how all the building are so color!
