Homestay in Atlanta during Solar Eclipse

Irene from Spain is staying with our host Elizabeth in Atlanta. She stayed for 3 weeks while she was doing a research internship at the Georgia Tech University. She was lucky enough to be there for the hotly anticipated total solar eclipse. To get the best view they went on a camping trip creekside in the mountains in Elizabeth's vintage camper. They enjoyed the solar eclipse in the company of family and friends in a remarkably beautiful mountain setting. Read about Irene's amazing first homestay experience with her host Elizabeth.

Delicious lunch for eclipse party

I have to admit that the day before I left for my stay in Atlanta, I was wondering why in the world I’d decided to spend all of my August holidays in a place that wasn’t the destination of my dreams. Although Elizabeth, my host, had done her best to answer my questions before I booked, I still had misgivings! This was my first Homestay experience, and the only reason I was going was to participate in a program at a well-respected Atlanta university. I chose this place because of how Elizabeth describes herself, what guests said about their stays, and the pictures showed the charm and sense of “home” of the house.

My cozy room in Elizabeths home

Elizabeth has travelled the world, and empathizes with the challenges of traveling and enjoys making others feel welcome and included in the life of the house, if that’s what they want. She’s given me the opportunity to live as a “local”, which I couldn’t have experienced otherwise. For instance, I’ve enjoyed outings as varied as attending a film festival showing in a beloved (and beautiful!) theater and camping to view the solar eclipse. At home, I could go out into the garden to bring in fresh flowers whenever I wanted, listen to all sorts of new-to- me American music, talk about all kinds of things around the dinner table and basically be a part of the life of the house, enjoying others who came and went during the month. On top of all of that, she was ruthless in her efforts to help me improve my English. LOL (She said she had to return the favour for all of the kindness others showed her while she was studying French abroad!)

I hope that my stay with Elizabeth has been as enriching for her as it has been for me! All in all, it’s been a terrific way to spend my holidays, and I know that if you stay here, you’ll love it as much as I have!
