Culture, Customs, People, Food, my Homestay experience,

Tell us about your homestay experience.

The most was the interaction with the family. A homestay gives the feeling of being part of the family sharing their living space. Compare that with an impersonal hotel room and, on top of a lower price, it is so much cosier.

What did you do in Cuernavaca?

The mountainous area was unexpected and also the pine forest in which my hostess lives and where it was much cooler than in the city; the smell was wonderful!

I visited the city, museums and a pyramid.

One day I went to Tepotzlan and took the path, rocky and steep, to the Tepozteco pyramid. It was brutal but I was proud to have made it at 76.

Went back a few days later to see the town which is very pretty; a relief from all the tourists I saw on the Sunday.

Any tips or advice for other travellers?

The Tepozteco pyramid for sure. If you go up have plenty of water and a walking stick would certainly have helped! Avoid weekends because all of Mexico City seems to come out.

Having an intermediate knowledge of Spanish was very helpful. I only heard English spoken 2x during my 2-week stay so I could improve/practise the language.

How was your experience with your host?

I learned more about the customs, food and language and, yes, it was very different from day-to-day life at home.

That is the difference between a tourist and a traveller, the latter being a person interested in the culture, customs, people and food.

My hostess was the best  with her generosity and making time for me!
