My husband and I are two retired teachers living in a large 3 storey home in the vibrant neighbourhood of Westboro in Ottawa, Canada. Since our children moved out we have a second floor available for accommodations consisting of a living room, two large bedrooms, a hallway with closet space, an office/kitchenette, a bathroom and front and back balconies. Currently the second floor is only accessible by entering from the main floor; however, we hope to install an outdoor stairway and private entrance in the near future.

We have high-speed wireless internet and basic cable TV, which would be provided to any homestay guests (though they would need to supply their own computer). Guests would also be free to use our second floor landline phone on occasion, and our washer and dryer (located in our semi-furnished basement). Though the upstairs kitchenette has both a small fridge, an oven and a microwave, guests can make use of our downstairs kitchen, which includes a full-sized fridge, an oven, a microwave, a 4-slice toaster, sink and chairs and table for four. Guest will also be provided their own basic cutlery, bowls, dishes, cups and glasses.

The second floor is fully furnished; both bedrooms, having beds, book shelves, closets and desks, and the living room having two couches (one of which is a hideaway bed), a large TV and a DVD player. The second floor ceiling is 2.5 meters; the bedrooms are 3.4X4.1 meters, and the living room is slightly larger.
We also have spacious front and back gardens, a large back deck, a driveway, and an outdoor barbecue that guests can use if so desired. Free street parking is also available and we are a mere 3-5 minutes’ walk from the stylish Westboro Village (complete with numerous stores, pubs and restaurants).

Major bus routes to Carleton University, Ottawa U, Algonquin College, the downtown core and many other parts of town are all within a few minutes’ walk, as is the nearby Dovercourt Recreation Centre, complete with swimming pool and gym. Another enjoyable feature of the area is the nearby Ottawa River Parkway, which offers people a spacious recreational area. The Parkway has both walkways and bike paths for those who enjoy these activities. Despite the many nearby amenities, our street is a quiet suburban area with very little through traffic, making it easy for students to concentrate on their studies.

In addition to having raised two sons, my husband, Tony, and I both worked as elementary school teachers for many years and Tony still works as a Soccer Coach for various clubs in the Ottawa area; as such, we have a substantial background in both the education and care of young people and appreciate all the responsibilities involved. English is our first language though we speak enough French to make ourselves understood.

Due to the large size of our home, we can easily provide comfortable accommodations for as many as two home stay guests. While we assume guests would prefer to use their own private bathroom on the second floor, there are as many as 4 bathrooms in the house in total so homestay guests would not necessarily have to worry about the difficulties of sharing a single washroom on occasions where that issue came up.
In terms of our own expectations, the only things we ask as is that guests are respectful; that they do not make a lot of noise after midnight; that they clean up after themselves when needs be; and they do not smoke indoors. If you need any further information from us, we are more than happy to provide it.

Thanks very much,

Sincerely,

Cynthia

The neighbourhood has many parks, trendy shops, cafes and eateries but is only a few minutes bus ride from Carleton University, Ottawa U, Algonquin College and the downtown core. Several major shopping malls and large grocery stores are all within a 20 minute walk or several minute bus ride, as are a major movie theatre and Hospital. Our house is on an upscale, quite street perfect for students looking for a calm place to study. I enjoyed my stay with Cynthia and Tony very much. They made me feel as part of the family and were very kind and helpful. I had all of the attic area to myself and had my own bathroom. They let me use the kitchen, TV and the family computer. The only issue was the new housing construction next door. On weekdays they usually started working and making lots of noise at 7 am. On weekends it was usually quiet.
