Treffen Sie Antonella
For an economy accommodation I don't think I could have done better than choose Antonella's Homestay. My travel schedule meant that I arrived at the apartment quite late but this was not a problem for my hosts who welcomed me warmly into their home, offered me a drink, explained what was necessary about the accommodation and gave me some very useful information about the neighbourhood and Rome in general in the process.
The room is spacious with a very high ceiling and met all my requirements. It is situated at the rear of the building, overlooking a courtyard and the rear of apartments on the other side, so is very quiet - but it is a quiet neighbourhood anyway. There are good shutters on the window eliminating any light disturbance. I found the bed firm and very comfortable. The bathroom is immediately next door, almost as good as en-suite, so there is a sense of real privacy which my hosts showed great respect for. The bathroom is compact but I found it perfectly adequate. I could take a continental breakfast, making fresh coffee myself, in the family kitchen in my own good time. I could come and go at my own convenience. Getting back quite late on a couple of occasions during my 5 night stay was no problem, though, of course, I took care to be careful and as quiet as possible.
I found the location very good. It is far enough away from the main roads for it to be quiet but not too far away to walk down to them in a few minutes, as the main roads are, by and large, where most of the local restaurants, shops and services are. However, there is a very nice greengrocer and general store, a pasticceria, a bar and a church just a few yards down the road from the main entrance to the block. Just round the corner is the terminus for the 64 bus, which has many stops through much of central Rome between there and the main Termini station, and the Piazzale di San Pietro train station from where it's possible to catch trains that link with Rome's Metro network or indeed to many places beyond Rome itself. It's also easy to walk into central Rome from the accommodation, or to walk the Aurelian walls along the Janiculum hill into neighbouring Trastevere. I found it a very safe area, even late at night. An impressive view of the dome of St Peter's Basilica graces the street, which tells you how close to the Vatican the accommodation is.
I really enjoyed my short time in Rome and I think staying at Antonella's Homestay had a lot to do with it, especially in the sense that it made me feel, just as probably all independent travellers like to feel, that I wasn't so much a tourist as a resident, regardless of how short a time it was for.
