Rencontrez Maden
No one was there to receive or welcome us and we couldn't get in touch with them so we left after we waited for one hour. Needless to say we were pretty disappointed. I learnt a valuable lesson, to always get the host's mobile number!
If you are looking to dive deep into the culture and life of Cambodia, Maden and his Homestay is the place for you! Maden and his family couldn't be more welcoming and they are more than happy to share about local traditions, history and anything else with you. The food they cooked for us was delicious and traditional Khymer recipes! Maden took us to the local market, where we couldn't take our eyes off things that were completely unfamiliar to us. One day we went for a walk through the fields and the village with Maden's daughter and we really enjoyed the beautiful rural landscape and watching the kids of the village play! Maden's tuk tuk driver Rechart happily took us anywhere and we had fun playing cards with him as well : ) He is so reliable and you never have to worry about getting ripped off by him which by that stage was like a breath of fresh air to us! The Homestays' location is perfect, it's out on the country, in a village, OFF THE BEATEN TRACK (!!!) yet close enough so you can easily immerse yourself in all the tourist activities like exploring the ruins of Angkor, head out in Pub Street or to the floating village on nearby lake Tonle Sap.
Our Home stay with Pen was really great! We loved staying in Tham Lot, a little mountain village where you can go hiking (Pen's dog "Milky" will happily accompany you) or visit the caves.
The Home stay consisted of different bungalow style huts on a big property. You can eat at the Home stay (Pen cooks with organically grown veggies and herbs that she is growing herself and "safe meat" from her butcher friend) or one of the local restaurants. Pen's cooking was always very delicious and she was more than happy to look after our individual needs (I had diarrhea :/ )
We only stayed for a couple of nights and there were a few other travelers staying at the same time as us. You are likely to meet at the chill out area near the kitchen and can then chat and play cards if you feel like some company.
