Indian hospitality is justifiably famous, and a way of life. To experience this philosophy, you have to stay with an Indian family. After several visits to India and staying in good hotels , I felt I should try out a homestay. Kolkata was always a city that has fascinated me, but also one that I knew very little about. So it was the city for my very first homestay I hoped that my hosts could introduce me to the city. My choice for the homestay fell on the Mukherjees on the basis of the previous review , praising the warm hospitality ,as well as immense concern for the safety of the guests.
It turned out to be a wonderful experience. I reached the house to find a smiling Pavan waiting ouside . I was ushered in , and a beaming Shubra (his wife) welcomed me with hot tea and delicious snacks. Immediately felt a nice rapport with them. They were exactly the hosts I was hoping for - very warm, cultured, educated and courteous. The penthouse room was spacious, bright and well ventilated, with a balcony overlooking a park. There was a sunny roof garden , where I could read and watch birds. I had opted for breakfast and one meal.Turned out to be a very good decision, in view of Shubra's excellent cooking. Not only is she a superb cook, but she also offers her guests regional and local specialities, so difficult to find in restuarants.Even for breakfast, Shubra dished up many special dishes , freshly cooked.
The Mukherjees took care of everything - from getting a sim card for my phone, catching a train etc. But there were also very nice experiences, which are not part of hosts' duty. . For instance I was invited to their charming club, where we sat by a lake and had hot snacks. The other was my search for a typical traditional Bengal style gold bangle. I would never have found it without Shubra, who knew exactly where to go, and Pavan driving us there.
Time flew and it was time to leave. I felt I was leaving very good friends.
I will definitely return to them -my very good friends The Mukherjees.

Homestay Host Family Pavan in ,

Dear Kamala - Thank you for the wonderful review. On retrospection, I feel that we have done what any homestay host should do i.e. welcome a guest and send back a family member. It was our privelage to host you and we will always remember the way you became a part of the family. Any time in the future, we will always be there to welcome you.

Pavan and his wife were amazing. My two month stay in Kolkata would not have been the same without them! From the moment I arrived, I was treated like a close friend.

As a solo female traveler, Pavan went above and beyond to make sure I was safe at all times. For example, when my phone was stolen, Pavan went with me to the police station to help file a report. The Mukherjees have also helped with things from connecting me with a good tailor to assisting with the arrival of packages.

The food was spectacular! I had absolutely no need to eat out because Mrs. Mukherjee's food was better than any restaurant I visited.

The room is very pleasant. Perfect for solo travelers or couples. Great balcony and view of the park!

In good neighborhood. New Alipore is very safe, quite, clean, and residential. However, it is not extremely central (a bit south of central Kolkata).
