Incontra Niha
We stayed with Niha and family from 2nd to 5th April'2016. It was a family outing for us- myself, my wife, my son and my elderly parents. We were given a suite portion of the house comprising a bedroom and sitting area. A bathroom is attached to it.
What we liked-
1. The location and the view- It is typical Darjeeling house perched on the hillside, so offers a serene view of the valley. Mornings are beautiful, one can see the sun rising (off course if the sky is clear) and can hear chirping of innumerable birds. Open the windows and see the nature entering your room while you are still curled on the bed in blankets. We were told that Kanchenjunga can be seen from the room window, again if it is clear. We couldn't see it because of cloudy weather. A morning walk down hill is rejuvenating. There is an old monastery down the road.
You can spend hours lying on the bed and chatting leisurely with all windows open. It is a bliss.
2. The room- It is clean & tastefully decorated, beds are comfortable, linen is clean and ample blankets are provided. The bathroom is clean and big. The geyser works well and ample water is available (this is rarity in Darjeeling). Rooms are airy with enough natural light. Room decor is really great. The amenities provided and the room itself is nowhere less than a good hotel room.
3. The food- It is amazing. You can state your choice or can just leave it to the host. You will not be disappointed. They treat you with a big heart, so there will always be some food left even if one has eaten twice his regular quota. The food is served in adjoining dining area. There is a great gallery attached to it, complete with cute tables and chairs. It is romantic experience to have a candlelight dinner in the gallery experiencing the chilly wind and watching the twinkling lights of the hill side. Well selected old Hindi songs are being played to add to the pleasure. Heavenly experience. Similar goes for the morning breakfast and hi tea.
4. The Hosts- Very gentle and affable people. Niha, her parents, her sister, the youngest member- Platyush. A small boy, Santay, was our guide and a small girl, Bandana, helped us with our needs. They have a lovely dog- Jara. Within hours she got attached to us and would accompany us on the morning walks.
What you should be clear about-
1. It is home stay and not a hotel. So please have realistic expectations. Also it is a hillside house where a family lives, hence it will look just like that and not like hill side resort/plush hotel/ rich man's bungalow.
2. Please do not give it a try if you have elderly people with you. There is a long steep uphill/downhill walk involved, they may not be able to cope with it. Elderly people from hills are seen easily walking around- even with luggage but it is difficult for people from plains.
3. If you are fond of hustle bustle, want to visit the mall and town frequently, like to have shopping choices around, like to have multiple food choices & dining places at hand- then this may not be your cup of tea.
4. There are chances that you may find the locality around to be a bit downmarket. But they are simple, gentle hill people. If you do not have hang ups, you will love them.
I hope my review will be helpful for you.
