Eva and her family were AMAZING. We stayed with her daughter in law Karina and her two children Gael and Fernanda. She treated us like family and we truly appreciated her generosity and care. The house was beautiful and has balconies, patios, and AC in the bedrooms. It is HOT in Merida in August -temps of 100 degrees even at night, and heat indexes of 114 daily. Bring 100spf and definitely bring bug spray!! We tried all kinds of authentic Mexican cuisine including machacados- a special slushy of any fruit you want. Esquites - an amazing mix of corn and Parmesan cheese and an array of toppings at the park of the Americas (pick the stand with the longest line it's the best!). We tried gorditas- handmade open pitas with various fillings like meat beans and cheese, and carne al pastor- an awesome open flame cooked meat that you can eat in tacos or on pizza! We visited the center of the city- check out casa maya for low priced jewelry and trinkets. We toured the cenotes, charcas de sal, and progreso beach, and even got a glimpse of some flamingos with our tour guide victor from sol turquesa tours( all in Spanish and very informative). We paid 1000 pesos per day for two people (about 55$ a day for both of us). We made friends with our uber driver (the bus was fast and bumpy but an adventure nonetheless!) The zoo and all museums were free. The city is SO SAFE AND CALM and the locals are wonderful. We loved the breakfast buffet at hotel colonial for 110 pesos a person (about 6$)- try the flan there! We toured an Hacienda which was a big plantation which was cool to see. Eva's neighborhood is within walking distance to various stores and a park. The bus comes right to the corner. Costco was the best place to get food for our stay. If you want to visit Mexico then Merida is the place to go! I was so sad to leave and look forward to returning! I truly left a piece of my heart in Merida and I will carry Merida with me in my heart always. An unforgettable experience!

Unfortunately Eva could not be there in person but she made sure that I still had a family to visit in Merida anyway. Such a thoughtful gesture and such a comfortable stay all round. Very easy to get into the centre and back. Would 100% recommend.

What a lovely couple to stay with! Eva and Juan are beautiful people who treated us like their own children. The house was clean, quiet and comfortable, but within a minute's walk to the bus stop where regular buses take you into downtown Merida. Eva took us to the beach and to a Cenote (highly reccomend!), even though she had friends visiting, and we really felt like we were involved and welcomed into their culture. Eva and Juan were always there for help and advice, and our two daughters (6 and 8) had a wonderful time - especially wild swimming at the cenote where racoons and coatis stole our sandwiches! We will miss these wonderful hosts and would highly recommend them to anyone, especially fmailies looking for a bit of emersion into local life. Thank you so much.

I had a great time! We shared family meals, stories and it was almost a complete immersion in Spanish (we cheated w/English now and then). Beaches, museums, shopping, repeat as needed. I look forward to returning to Merida. (driving here is not for the faint of heart)
