Waikino is about 1.1/2 hrs from Auckland. An easy drive south passing through dairy and agricultural land and charming small NZ towns. Waikino was built to service the gold mines but is now a sleepy little village in the bush.
Our house sleeps 8 and there is a double bed for 2 more in a warm cabin outside. There are two sofa beds on the mezzanine floor for large families.
We are north facing, so get the sun all day, and overlook a great lawn and garden where you can relax at home and play games. There is a barbecue and seating on the deck. Our home is more suited to a family on holiday who wants to be close-ish to the city but wants to experience the beauty of NZ scenery and small towns. The tariff is for the whole house rather than each room.

Additional Info

We are minutes from a popular cycle track that takes you to Waihi (you can go one way with your bike on the historic Waikino train and then cycle back and on to Thames or Te Aroha. We are located in the beautiful Karangahake gorge and its 20 minutes by car to the surf beach at Waihi. You can walk the bush tracks to the top of Mt Karangahake and Mt Te Aroha and then relax in the hot pools at the quaint township of Te Aroha. Sample wine at the Ohinemuri winery or have a beer at the local pub in Waikino. Browse the antique shops in Paeroa or just chill at home.

About the Area

Location is on the brow of a small hill looking north east. We are 1hr 15 mins from Auckland city. You will need a car to get here and travel to the many attractions in the area. Eg Hot springs in Te Aroha, Waihi beach (15mins) Whangamata (30mins) Both are good swimming and surfing beaches. The goldfields historic railway is just minutes from the house. Using steam and diesel, this vintage train makes a one-hour 6.5km trip from Waihi to Waikino and back. There are trains Mon-Fri at 10am, 11.45am and 1.45pm, and everyday during school holidays and throughout Jan and Feb.
Historic Victoria Battery was the largest quartz-crushing plant in Australasia with underground ore kilns and tunnels.
Ohinemuri Estate Winery on Moresby Street in Karangahake, the winery is open daily in summer.
The cycle track passes Waikino. Cycles can be hired locally.
Walk through the tunnel to reach a beautiful swimming pool on the river or just walk the many tracks in gorge and Mt Te Aroha and Mt Karangahake.
