In the letters he wrote during this phase, the poet did not hide his loneliness.
This is a square full of tradition in Lisbon, scene of remarkable episodes in the history of Portugal. The Gothic ruins of the Carmo Convent poetically recall the earthquake tragedy of 1755. And it was in this lovely square that in the 1974 Carnation Revolution, the population came together to see the government fall.

Located in Largo do Carmo, Chiado, one of the most emblematic and traditional neighborhoods of Lisbon. Located between Bairro Alto and Baixa.
In 1856, with the creation of the literary guild, a club of intellectuals of the time, Chiado became the center of Portuguese Romanticism, obligatory passage point for those who wanted to be known in the city. The writer Eca de Queiroz in his work "The Maya" did great reference to Chiado and the Literary Club.
The Chiado is divided by the parishes of Sacramento and the Martyrs, two of the small (website hidden) 1980, due to the change in the habits of Lisbon's and the opening of the shopping center Amoreiras, Chiado was decadent.
In 1988, at dawn on August 25, between 3 and 4 am, a fire broke out in Grandela building, which was to take large proportions spreading it over seventeen buildings. Chiado was destroyed and its reconstruction led throughout the 1990s, leaving the design in charge of the architect Alvaro Siza Vieira .Chiado again became an important trading center of Lisbon, one of the most cosmopolitan and busiest areas of the Portuguese capital, the scene of emblematic events like the Vogue Fashion's Night Out.
