About the Area

Sibiu is one of Romania's most beautiful and tourist towns thanks to its unique and unique architectural heritage. Founded in 1190 by Saxons on an ancient Roman settlement called "Cibium" in the Transylvanian region, Sibiu was the richest of the seven walled citadels and was located along the trade route between East and West. In 2007 it was designated European Capital of Culture. Divided into High Town and Low Town, the historic center of Sibiu has narrow and steep streets overlooked by 17th-century buildings with characteristic timpan roofs, large squares and defense towers. In the Upper Town there are 3 squares: Piata Mare or Piazza Grande, with the Baroque Roman Catholic Church, the Council Tower and the late Baroque Brukenthal Palace, the Little Square or Piata Mica, lined with shops and cafés , And Piaaza Huet where there are several Gothic buildings and the Gospel Church. The Lower Town is more rustic and is linked to the top by the Bridge of Lies, the first wrought iron bridge in Romania. Very pretty also Goldsmiths Square. About 30 kilometers from Sibiu is the Sibiel village, famous for the presence of the Zosim Oancea museum where the largest collection of religious icons on glass is preserved, a widespread art in Transylvania since the 18th century. Nearby are also the Fortified Saxon Churches, Curtea de Arges, Fagaras fortress and the medieval towns of Sighisoara and Brasov.
