So far we have enjoyed all of our homestay experiences as a family with a baby daughter. As like other homestayers we prefer local hosts to complement our special needs like access to kitchen other amenities and of course for budgetary reasons. However seeking and staying in reasonable offers do not have to mean cutting corners or accepting indifference as normal.

I am sure Joseph was a great host before as I read all the comments however I think it seems he is suffering now a "homestay fatigue". Yes he is kind, easygoing but we did not get a proper welcome. First he was not at home that is fine as long as basic things are provided like towel, hairdryer etc. Other guests at his home welcomed us. As a family with a little one asking eggs or milk at home was understood as extra that was expected to be bought by us. I do not want to be thankless as he allocated us the largest room with private bathroom however it was not clean at all and the shared living room was mysteriously messy maybe because of other long term guests. On the other hand, the kitchen was quite clean and the room has a separate access which we really appreciated.
Anyway we felt that everything comes at a price so a reasonable stay in this expensive city means you will be get out of your comfort zone too much as one of the other guest mentioned very recently. Thank you Joseph but it would be nice to provide basic things and a clean up before your guests arrive.

    Run away !!!
It was the worst experience we have had in this type of stay. Joseph was not present and it is his son (15) and a friend of him barely-old who welcomed us.
The house was a mess. Initially, we even thought it was a squat!
Our room was separated from the living room and kitchen of the owners by a french window without curtains, just a screen which hid a short part. So as soon as the youngs switch on the light in the next room or in the kitchen, we were woken up (and I'm not even talking about the noise, I don't mean have a party but even just talking or kitchen sounds). It lasted until 1:30 am (+ once also at 4 am). I contacted by email Joseph who told me they'd attention. The second day they stop at 23:30. It could go ...
But the third night, it's started again until 1.30 am.
Many times we got up to turn off the light but each time they came and switch on.
And every morning they switch on and noisy in the kitchen at 7:30 am
The kitchen was a mess, like a squat. Several garbage bags overflowing on the floor, moldy bread, sink, hob and work plans invaded by dirty dishes, fat everywhere, it was disgusting. Obviously we could not take breakfast. Moreover, the young asked us not to come into the kitchen ... It stayed two days and before they decide to remove garbage and cleaning (a bit !).

There were clothes balls placed onto the radiators. This is how they were drying their laundry !

The cleanliness of the bedroom and bathroom was deplorable: hairs and hair everywhere ...

The washing machine and the bathroom used by the owners are located after the chamber. So the owner go through our room to use them !

Last thing, and that made me furious : no towel. I asked the young people: "we do not have one." I wrote to Joseph who told me actually he could not give us one !!! Wow !
We had to buy towels the next day ! It's a real shame.

Maybe Joseph is a good guy but he shouldn't rent bedrooms while he is gone.

Lamentable

Joseph you were amazing! You made me feel at home during my 5 week stay. You and Cyrus were willing to do anything to make my time there more enjoyable! If/when I come back to Edinburgh I will most certainly be looking to see if you have a spare room avaliable ! Gavin :)

I'm sorry, Joseph, I'm sure you are a very nice person, even though we never met you, but we left one day early because the cleanliness of your home is way out of our comfort zone! The bathroom and kitchen, both shared areas are filthy! Mold in the bathroom and honestly, we were so uncomfortable, we just couldn't stay the 2nd night. Your son was very polite, but the sheets he gave us were rags and one small bath towel and one small hand towel for two adults to shower? Seriously?!? Please clean your home and provide guests with some kind of decent accommodation and amenities!

It was good experience, but nevertheless a little disappointment.
We were suggested by Joseph that Room 4 which has big space with attached washroom would be provided to us.We were 3 girls and the basic requirement was attached washrooms as we do not want to share.

when we reached there, we were informed that Room 4 has already been occupied by family and we need to cop up with Room 1 and need to share the washroom.
After a long journey and then not getting the room we booked was really disappointment.

The owner was sorry and didn't know how we and family got the same Room booked? Although we were only suggested by the owner for room 4 and booked earlier than the family, but we didn't want to spoil anyone's mood so just adjusted ourselves.

we felt cheated, may be the other family would have given much amount, dont' know? Although money doesn't matter to us, what matters was comfort for which we booked the room.

Anyways, everything was good (breakfast)apart from the room and the washroom we shared, otherwise it was awesome visit to Scotland.

    Thanks

It was really a good experience with homestay. It is very easy to search the house where you want. We felt staying at our home whilst our stay at Mr. Joseph's house in Edinburgh. He extended kitchen facilities to us. It helped us a lot for preparing food for our kids.
    Thanks to Mr. Joseph.

That was a plenty of nice words to say, Joseph and his son, Cyrus were being enjoyful to talk everything We concerned. The room was spacious place for three persons, sufficient fresh air and bright light from the wide windows and doors. And as well as the kitchen utilities that we can use for our stuff. And also the toilet was clean and hygiene. The location was outscirt of the city Edinburgh but it took only a-5 minute walk to the nearest bus stop to the downtown. Thank you to Joseph and family. We will see you again
