OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
******** Please Note ********
- From the hours of 10 p.m. to 10 a.m. the bathroom is private, just for you! During daytime hours of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. if I need to access the bathroom I will need to go through the guest room. I never enter the guest room if the door is closed but I do ask guests to leave the door ajar when convenient for them for me to pass through or when they are absent from the apartment. This arrangement has proven to be very comfortable for my guests and myself.
- The guest room has it's own window unit air conditioner for your private use and comfort. If you desire to have fresh outside air you can achieve this by using the fan feature of the A.C. Because the A.C. is installed in the window you will not be able to open the window. Of course the window of the bathroom opens.
- The guest room doesn't have much of a view but is considered exceptionally quiet in spite of its fantastic location.
- Internet Access
- Smoke alarm

About the Area
The East Village is a downtown neighborhood which is famous for counter-culture and alternative arts much like East Berlin. The apartment is in the heart of the E.V. surrounded by restaurants and 24/7 activity as well as very central to famous NYC sights and transportation including the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Museum of Modern Art, Empire State Building & The High Line among many others.
Though now famous for some of the best cutting edge restaurants and designer shops in NYC it still has the Beats and punks, artists and skaters that originally made it famous. You used to be able to see the Ramones play for the price of a pizza slice, or hear Patti Smith read poetry in a church. But despite those common refrains, visitors continue to flock to the neighborhood—for what it is, not for what it once was.
Take it from Jimmy Webb, owner of long-standing vintage shop Trash and Vaudeville: the spirit of the East Village is still alive, and it's still rock 'n' roll. "Rock 'n' roll is love," says Webb, who arrived in 1975 and never left. "It's not discriminatory." Back in the day his store drew the likes of Debbie Harry and Iggy Pop; these days you might see Skrillex or Lil' Wayne shopping its aisles.
Artist Dave Ortiz also sees the East Village as alive and well. He came from Brooklyn in 1988 to hang with skaters in Tompkins Square Park, and loved seeing a diverse group of black, white and Latino people all living together. "It's still a neighborhood where there's a freedom to be who you are," he says.
What's more, there are still independent book and record shops. Saint Marks Place remains home for teenage punks who don't fit in anywhere else. And you can still find vibrant Spanish and Ukrainian communities, a classic New York City egg cream at Gem Spa and a multitude of artists looking for inspiration, the way upstarts like Jean-Michel Basquiat once did.
Where it is: The East Village extends north from East Houston Street to East 14th Street, and east from Lafayette Street and Fourth Avenue to the East River. (Alphabet City is the neighborhood's eastern edge and includes Avenues A, B, C and D.)
Please do some online research and look at photos of the East Village as it has a certain look. The E.V. is the U.S. home to punk rock and my neighborhood though affluent and desirable keeps a rock-n-roll flavor

Great location! Lots of awesome gf and vegan restaurants nearby. Best food that I have ever had actually:-) Room is within very close walking distance to a lot of stores for grocery shopping or otherwise. Cannot beat the location! Also 5 minute walk to the number 6 subway (Astor Place) which goes straight to Grand Central that has subways that go everywhere.
Room itself was nice and warm in cold weather and I am always cold! Bed was nice and comfy. John provided a lot of amenities which was nice as I didn't have to pack them (shampoo, conditioner, hair dryer, hangers). Towels were nice and soft. There was also a medicine cabinet that you could avail yourself of anything if you forgot to bring it. He pretty much invited you to use whatever in the kitchen. He wasn't there much so there was a lot of privacy. Wifi was good and there were no troubles with it at all. Was fairly quiet as far as street noise, building noise, etc.- nothing ever kept me up or woke me up. Oh and he also sends you info on the East Village to familiarize you with the area. I have never had anyone do that before. I thought that was a really thoughtful thing to do:-) He also answers any questions you might have.
John was an excellent host and we enjoyed the opportunity to stay with him! Located already in a great neighborhood, John had so much information about the city prepared and sent to us days before we even left for the trip. This way, we were able to decide on some meals, bars, and attractions to visit and had a great insiders' guide to doing it the easy way. The apartment was clean and had all amenities that we would ever need for the stay, and even though it was located on a busy street we never noticed any noise from outside. I will be contacting John again the next time I return to NY!
John was very nice and helpful - he sent me a guidebook of getting around NYC in general and also a pdf of things to do/food to eat, and answered whatever questions I had regarding getting around. He also made sure he had everything well-prepared for his guests, eg. Hairdryer, first-aid kit, toiletries, snacks, tea, water etc. It was overall a very pleasant stay, plus the location of John’s place (it being not too far away from a subway station + lots of good food around the area) made it very convenient. Thank you John! :)
Very nice stay at John's place.
The location couldn't be more perfect, AC in the room and very confortable bed! We'll come again when we come back to NY.
we stayed 3 nights at John's place and we loved it! Perfect location ! The room was very comfy and the bed very confortable. John is a very good host and always at our disposal if needed. Highly recommended !

John is a great host, easy to work with, easy to meet, helpful, friendly, available, attentive to details in a great way. The private room, its bed and bath were all neat, clean, comfortable. If looking for a true in the heart of the East Village experience in NY... Astor Place / NYU / Cooper Union all close by... handy subway stop right there, too... then check it out :-)
