Great South Philly location!
Typical small South Philly Row home lovingly renovated and updated for us to enjoy.
I have a small upstairs guest room with a twin- sized sleeper sofa. Room is near shared Hall Bathroom, and has closet, drawer space, and window overlooking deck. Best for one person staying one week or less.
The Basement dorm offers a double-sized futon and two extra twin airbrds, plus TV, microwave, table and chairs, and a private half bathroom. The basement is a traditional “unfinished” South Philly basement - meaning it has a low ceiling with exposed pipes. The laundry, mechanicals, and homeowner storage are there too, but it is still a spacious room....and quite private. This room works well for two or three adults or two adults and a child. Guests will use shared bathroom on second floor for showering. This large room is best for more than one person or for one person staying for a week or more. It is ideal for students on a budget.
The living room/dining room, back garden, laundry* and kitchen (plus kitchen equipment, plates, and utensils) are also available for your use during your stay with me. Just clean up after use. Thanks!
Self serve breakfast snacks will be provided if requested ahead of time @ $5 per morning, but you can always make your own coffee or tea and use kitchen toaster, refrigerator, and stove to fix your own at no extra charge, and there are numerous breakfast and brunch restaurants nearby, as well as grocery stores.
*Please do only one load of laundry per week. Additional usage will be charged @ $5 per load.

Additional Info

No smoking, please.
And it goes without saying I won't permit drinking, drugs or parties in my house!

Felt at home at Mary Jo's place.. the place is clean and quiet. Stayed there for 28 days and Mary is always there to answer all my queries. It's highly recommended! Thanks Mary for all the help!

The basement was very unusual, clean and Mary Jo was lovely. The only concern was the fact you could hear everything we were saying as the floor was above. Thank u for the stay.

On the website it says it can accomodate 3 guests n she have three beds but in reality she gave me only one small sofa bed... there was no air conditioner in the room. The room was so small i wasn't even able to open door completely because of bed. And she asked me how many times u will take shower. Lol so cheap.

I’m sorry you were unhappy with your stay, Aisha. I was also dismayed.
First, through some mistake on the website, you were able to ask for the basement room even though I had blocked it’s availability. I immediately told you it was blocked off and unavailable, but that you could have my small upstairs bedroom for one guest-one night. Somehow you were still able to book the basement. This was a flaw on the Homestay.com site. Neither of us is at fault. However, I immediately responded to you, and told you that you would be in the small upstairs bedroom, not the basement. You did not object.
For one person (one night’s stay) the small bedroom has always been adequate, And most single people prefer it to the basement even those staying up to a week.
You saw the room, used it for several hours plus using the adjacent shared bathroom, and you did not complain about the size of the room.
Second, no other guest has ever asked me for permission to invite a friend over, but, thinking that you and your friend might enjoy sitting outside in the garden and conversing for a while in the evening, I said that would be OK.
I did not know that your friend intended to spend the night.
I never book more than one guest for the single bedroom.
When your friend arrived, I did not know that you would choose to entertain him in the little bedroom for several hours, including a prolonged shower, or that he apparently had no other lodging for the night. I gave in to his request to stay when he said he only needed a couple hours sleep before catching a train early in the morning. He said that neither of you minded sleeping in the single bed for a few hours before your early departure. I did not know that “early in the morning” would turn out to be mid afternoon!
I did not know that I would have to wake you when I became concerned at 12:30 p.m.
I never once mentioned your prolonged use of the shower to you or your friend. However, since you have brought it up here, I must say that I have never had a houseguest bring in a friend and spend more than four hours in the shower over a one night stay.
Nor do most guests leave the door closed on a hot, steamy bathroom, water splashed around, and standing water in the bathtub for me to clean up. I have never known a guest to open my personal cupboards to find my mouthwash, or dry with my personal bath and hand towels. This is a shared bathroom. I provide guest towels. What is in the cupboards is not shared, and if you require toiletries that you didn’t bring, you could ask. I would have gladly supplied additional guest towels, but, frankly, no guest has ever previously invited their own guest to come in and take a shower - let alone apparently multiple showers both before and after asking to sleep over.
To say I am displeased would be an understatement. But I trust we will both have positive experiences with home stays from now on.
I would simply caution you that when you want to book a room for two people, that you cover that situation with your host ahead of time, rather than booking for one. And of course, there are always boundaries on use of shared facilities.

The host was very friendly and helpful. Very kind and also had provided me with everything that I needed. I could use the kitchen, she had some little snacks on the table which was really nice. And was able to come and go when I pleased. Only thing the A/C was a bit loud, but when I turned it off it was fine. I would definitely recommend this host.

The upstairs room is really convenient for solo travelers and the house is very clean. I got warm welcome from Mary jo and her dog Stella. I couldn't talk much with Mary jo during my stay as I was spending most of the day time outside to roam around the city, however I did get a chance to chat with her for 30 mins before leaving. She is very kind...

Mary Jo was amazing. A great conversationalist. Comfy bed. Plenty of good advice on where to eat and what to visit and explore. Let me use her washer and dryer to do some laundry. And drove me to the bus station when it was time to leave. Had a cute playful adorable dog too (Stella). Went aboveboard and beyond

Everything was perfect. Mary Jo is a caring person, helped me in whatever I needed, home in a prime location with subway close and close to downtown, cafes and restaurants near the residence. I recommend the homestay.
