Rencontrez Ana Y Yaima
We stayed with Yaima, or should I say Yaima's Mum Anna for three nights. The location is perfect and you can reach all the sights in Old Havana very easily. If you haven't been to old Havana, the first few hours are a slight culture shock. The street, front door and communal lift make you wonder what you've let yourself in for. Once you enter Anna's spotlessly clean and airy flat your worries are allayed. The room is large with a high ceiling and a large un-glazed window with wooden shutters. A spotless bathroom was attached. Anna's breakfast were very good and she was always very attentive and helpful. The only downside, and it is our fault, is that Anna only speaks Spanish. Thank goodness for Google translate offline and fellow multi-lingual guests.
Although we only stayed two nights with Dasiel and his wife, we had a good time. The room was a good size and the air conditioning very effective. The room was spotlessly clean and cleaned again each morning. The simple but adequate breakfast was served on the very pleasant and cool roof terrace. We didn't eat at the homestay as we'd already booked restaurants, but our fellow guest did and thought the meal was excellent. Great location; you can reach the bus station in 10 minutes, the high street in less than 5 mins and the main square in 15 mins. .
Cienfuegos is well worth visiting and this is a good base to be located. Daseil speaks very good English and was extremely helpful. The two best restaurants (according to tripadvisor) are with 5 mins walk.
Omara and her daughter, Mylene were very nice people and provided a nice basic breakfast served on the shaded lower patio. The location of the flat was very good and it only took a few minutes to walk into the centre. In the heat of the day it was nice to come back and read on swing seat in the shade or sit on the roof terrace. Bearing in mind this homestay was the cheapest on our Cuba trip and Omara had just had an operation to her hand; but the whole 4 night experience was still let down by the room and the cleanliness of the room. The small room sits in the middle of the house and has no natural windows , just an opening flap to the corridor. Therefore it was fresh air versus privacy, and at night it turned into a hot box. The novel air con plant was stuck through the wall inside a cupboard; if turned on, you couldn't sleep without earplugs, if turned off, you fried. The room to the best of our knowledge was not cleaned or the "toilet tissue bin" emptied in the 4 days we were there; the basin was hanging off the wall and the tap moved in an orbit all of its own. On the plus side there was adequate hot water to the shower and basin. All-in-all though we still had a great time in Trinidad.
