Conheça Margaret
I was not comfortable here. Margaret was very intense at first and when we first met she spent hours going over countless rules (which to me seemed like just common decency, and i repeatedly told her she didn't have to go over these things). She told me there was a police office nearby watching the block. She seemed very worried , and wanted an emergency contact in case anything went wrong. when i asked her if i could eat food in the room, it felt weird that instead of answering the question directly, she reminded me she is a "god fearing woman". She seemed very specific about mostly trivial details, giving a lack of specificity in others. Apparently a previous guest had taken the mirror off of the wall, and attempted to rearrange the room? But one inconsiderate guest in the past does not entitle someone to lecture a stranger for an hour, or treat them with that level of suspicion.
Something she should have been clear about on the booking page, is that in her house has a 10pm curfew, after which she locks the doors and refuses to let guests in. If you miss this, she will leave you on the street all night, and she said she has done it before to guests and then called the cops on them. She also doesn't allow drinking, not that i was planning to, but it seems like the kind of thing you should tell people before they pay the booking fee. I ordered food late at night once, and she yelled at the delivery guy from her window and i had to apologize to him, and she told me not to order food at that time again. I was also told that i should buy my own toilet paper and keep it in my room so others can't use it (which is apparently a thing people do). These may be the kind of things that work for an overprotective parent, but not for a hospitality business. I am not her child, i am a paying guest. So i think everyone who is thinking about booking this place should read this review understand the level of restrictions they will be subject to that may prevent them from going out and enjoying london or even behaving freely, and decide whether that is worth the price for such a small room. To me, it is not.
In addition, the holder for the shower tap was broken, so the only way to shower is by holding it like a hose and spraying it on yourself which is difficult to do. She also lectured me for turning on the water heater late at night and told me i cannot shower at that time. Also, there was a musty sulfur type smell coming from the middle floor that gave me a headache. Thankfully, the room itself smelled fresh enough... Until i plugged in the mini-fridge in the room and it put out a vile odor.
The reason i gave this 2 stars instead of 1 is because the bed and room itself was fine, it had a closet and small tv. And when she wasn't burdening me with lectures about her numerous rules which that i couldn't keep track of, most of the time we talked she would just ask me about my day and then whatever i said, she would smile and say "thats nice". Which seemed genuinely warm. But i will not be booking again.
Mohini was very friendly, the apartment was actually better than the pictures made it look, and she makes for a very easygoing roommate. The building is modern, and pretty good public transit nearby. Also she has a very funny cat. Will definitely stay again next time i am in London.
