About the Homestay
After my daughter went to college in the US, I deacide to be a homestay host, because I love having people around. I had nothing but great time with my hosts since then! I live in a 4 bedroom apartment between the three main beaches of Rio, Ipanema, Arpoador and Copacabana. One of the rooms is occupied by an American Homestay guest, who was here last year for some weeks to learn Portuguese, fell in love with the city and DECIDED to come back to stay for a longer period of time. We are a cosmopolitan home, I travel a lot, have been to many countries and have friends and family in the US, Europe and Uruguay. I speak French, and Spanish English and love to exchange ideas and experiences. Our neighborhood has beaches, bars, restaurants, cinemas, theaters and much more. I am a fan and have an extra one of those who are welcome to use the lake or even biking to Sugar Loaf, the Botanical Garden and other nice places. There are bike lanes that take us everywhere, a real invitation to know the city and exercise at the same team. But if you prefer the subway, it's right around the block. And taxis or Ubers are available day and night and not expensive at all. Welcome!

There are many bars, restaurants, cinemas and theaters nearby and the subway is just half a block away. Taxis and buses pass by at any time of day or night.

Smoking is not allowed inside the apartment. Like animals, but not allowed in the house. The kitchen is all. They can use the fridge. Just do not forget to wash the dishes after. There is a day laborer making heavier cleaning 1 time per week, but we ask that the common areas are always tidy.
Smoking is not allowed.
I stayed at Isabella's home for five weeks. She helped me getting around in this beautiful city and was always available if I needed help. Her roomates were easy-going and interesting conversational partners.
Public transportation can be reached within minutes form Isabellas apartment. Within a less than 10-minute walk you can get to the beach, either Ipanema or Copacabana. Bars, shops, reastaurants and fitness centers are close-by and some of them are open 24/7. It is really a great place to stay at.
Stayed with Isabella in her cosy flat right in the middle of Copanema just minutes to the beaches by foot. Suprisingly quiet room. Isabella is a wonderful host and supplied me with a lot of useful advice for Rio. There is also a bike available, which is a great way to get around the neighboring areas, I took it though Ipanema and Leblon to the botanical garden and back along the Lagoa.
I loved everything about this place. The location, the host, the fellow guests, the pictures on the wall, even the doorman :)
I would recommend it to anybody and everybody and I would definitely come back myself.
What a great host!! She just gives you the key and off you go!! Anything you want or need she is right there, she is a busy lady but she's there for anything! I want to Cabo frio and Buzios which is 3/4 hours away for 4 fats and she told me to not take my big bag so she as stored it for me when I get back! The massive bonus is you turn left out of the house and 4 minutes straight down the st is Ipanema and right from the house 4 mins again is copacabana, brilliant!!!! Metro is 5 mins away so easy to find and really clean and safe!!!! I'm back next week where she will help me book flight to foz iguassu
Excelente anfitriona, nos sentimos como en casa. Seguro que volveremos .
Isabella is one of the best host I experienced! She is caring, fun, with good taste for food, music, films ofcourse and so many other things! Big loss if you are not knowing her! Extraordinary personality and great place to stay!!! Recommend.
Isabella e' una fantastica host molto amichevole e sempre pronta ad aiutarti. La casa e' davvero carina e in una bella posizione x girare Rio.
Nn avrei dubbi a ritornare da lei.
My stay with Isabella was fantastic! I initially booked to stay for 6 days and extended this to 10 – simply because I felt so welcome and at home with Isabella. I can’t even describe in words how great my time was in Rio, thanks to this exceptional host. Communication was easy from the get-go. Isabella provided me with the location of the apartment and different methods of travel (bus routes, taxi etc) and was very prompt in replying. I arrived at around midnight and Isabella was up to greet me and help me get settled into the room.
The location - The apartment is very central! Copacabana and Ipanema beaches are about 5 mins walk in either direction. The area is a very quiet and safe and moments away from the hustle and bustle of Rio! I always felt safe walking around the area at all hours of the day, as well as the early hours of the morning. Great local bars and amenities at your doorstep and as soon as you arrive in the apartment and close the front door you can’t hear much of what is happening outside!
The room – I stayed in the studio room, spring room (and the double room on my second stay). The studio room is small and cosy, plenty of wardrobe space and a bathroom right outside. It’s on one side of the apartment, so you get a lot of privacy. The spring room is beautiful and bright with a double bed, great ceiling fan and it’s very airy. The double bed room is at a different apartment closer to Copacabana and the Arpoadar and has 2 single beds, great if you’re travelling with a friend! All of the rooms I stayed in were clean and comfortable. I always had a light breakfast of cereal (sometimes fruits) and there are tea/coffee facilities available.
The host – Isabella (my Brazilian mum) made me feel so welcome. Isabella asks what you would like for breakfast when you arrive and has no trouble providing this. Isabella provided some great recommendations on places to go when it was raining and the beach was a no-go. Her local knowledge is second to none, and she gave me great tips and wonderful maps/ drawings of how to maneuver around the city! I met Isabella’s friends who were a lot of fun – I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard in my life. Isabella is a big bundle of joy, she is very well educated, fluent in English/French and Spanish and very talented. I had the pleasure of seeing some of her remarkable work!
After going to Salvador, and booking to stay with Isabella on my return to Rio for a further 2 days I ended up coming back early and staying for 4 days. I took a great bike ride with Isabella around the lake to the botanical gardens and had brunch at La Bicylette. I was travelling solo and met plenty of friends through Isabella. I simply loved my stay and I’m looking forward to returning very soon!
If you’re reading this, look no further – book your stay and thank me later.
This review is for the 'Private ensuite' room
The location is brilliant, right by the Arpoador with quick access to both Copacabana and Ipanema beaches.
Isabella does try to provide useful tips and information about the area and events that are going on.
Unfortunately, this listing is extremely misleading. We stayed in the 'Private ensuite' room. From the host's listing, it would seem that this room is part of the same apartment that the other rooms listed are and that the information and pictures are describing. In reality, this room and the 'Double bed room' are in a separate apartment down the road. I didn't see that main apartment, but the one we stayed in could only be described as 'Dated, uncomfortable, cheap-looking, but expensive for it is, Copacabana' rather than the 'Trendy, comfortable, cheap Ipanema' listing it is under.
The host didn't make us aware that we were staying in a separate apartment, nor provide the correct address, so we ended up going to the main apartment. She said this was an oversight, and that she thought she had given me the correct address (after booking) which may well have been, but the situation should not have arisen in the first place.
The listing also said a light breakfast would be provided. No breakfast was provided (unless you count leaving us a loaf of plain bread as breakfast.)
Potential guests should be aware of this and of the following details if considering booking the ensuite room:
The room is on the ground floor right above the entrance to the underground car park for the building. Expect to be woken up on several occasions by the gate beeping and cars going in and out.
If you are over 5'9" you won't be able to stand under the shower without crouching.
The shower is cold.
There is no air-conditioning (the listing doesn't include AC for this room, but still be aware.) There is a ceiling fan but it is very noisy.
The room and bathroom are very small, dated and very basic.
If you want an ensuite room in Rio, there are much better and cheaper options available in my opinion. We had other options, but chose this as we were swayed by the misleading listing.
