PLACES OF INTEREST

PALENQUE DE LOS CIMARRONES, VIÑALES
________________________________________

Crossing the 150 meters of the José Miguel Cavern, in the Viñales Valley, allows the visitor to go back in time until they reach 18th century Cuba and come into direct contact with the rich heritage bequeathed to our culture by the so-called “continental black".
Created in the early 90s, El Palenque de los Cimarrones constitutes a kind of living museum that weaves together, between legend and history, the passage of Afro-descendants through western Cuba.
This sui generis place houses the replica of a rebel slave settlement: sugar mills, improvised yagua beds, pillows made of banana leaves, clay pipes and other artisanal products recreate the life of the maroon in wild settings.
In the surroundings stands a curious restaurant that exhibits the symmetrical structure of open caneyes with guano roofs, installed in the style of ancient African villages. With capacity for 160 people, the establishment specializes in Creole food and is distinguished by the mythical “Oshún” cocktail, whose name honors the patron saint of Cuba.

INDIO CAVE, VIÑALES
________________________________________

The Viñales Valley is a karst area riddled with lots of caves, the best prepared for your visit is undoubtedly this one, the Cueva del Indio.
It is a cave with an underground river that can be visited first on foot and then by boat.
There is 1 km open to the public and it is quite impressive! Admission costs 5 CUC.

MURAL OF PREHISTORY, VIÑALES
________________________________________

A great trip. This enormous mural has been painted on the rock slope of the Pita mogote and represents the evolution of man.
There are different figures, both men and animals, all in full color.
Admission costs 3 CUC.

HOUSE OF
VEGUERO, VIÑALES
________________________________________

It is one of the most famous tobacco plantations. Depending on the season of the year you will see it with some plants or others (in summer corn is planted and in winter tobacco).
The beauty is the warehouse where they have the tobacco leaves drying and the demonstration of cigar making. Obviously you can buy a small package of 10 cigars there for 10 CUC.

BOTANICAL GARDEN, VIÑALES
________________________________________

Right in front of the Servi-Cupet gas station, as Cisneros Street turns north out of town, you'll see an extravagant, vine-filled door beckoning you inside.
This is the entrance to an extensive garden, work that began in 1918. Cascades of orchids bloom next to plastic doll heads, thickets of orange lilies grow in soft groves and maddened turkeys. Knock on the door of Little Red Riding Hood's house and someone will likely show up to show you around.
