Blues, jazz and gospel on a stay in Harlem homestay

On a trip to New York City, Tanja from Switzerland stayed with host Esmeralda in her apartment in Harlem - an up and coming neighbourhood in Manhattan, home to blues, jazz and gospel.

Tanja has always enjoyed travelling and on her trip to New York City she chose to stay in a homestay over a hotel as she wanted the chance to spend time with local people and experience the city’s neighbourhoods through a local lens. She also speaks four languages so travelling gives her the chance to talk with local people.

“It wouldn't have been such a great experience without being a homestay guest," Tanja said. "I treasure this trip!”

Before moving to New York from the west coast, host Esmeralda travelled a lot. These days, due to an injury, she can't travel as much and being a host is a great alternative for her to experience the world and meet new people without having to travel herself.

"I love learning about different cultures and languages, so I love being a homestay host because it's like bringing the travel to me."
